One of the first things we ask a new kid is whether he can read and write, and then congratulate him on his efforts in learning a great skill, no matter how far along he is. What we're really trying to determine is whether he will be able to write an essay as a consequence for misbehavior. I have been holding on to this essay for so long that I forgot who wrote it and when, but it's a great example of the typical piece of work. It is presented here, verbatim:
"the disguisting Behavior that got me in trouble was Putting fish in my vent. it was nasty Because ant or bugs could go there and if nobody didn't found it the room will smell. here is a list of things I can do insted of hideing my food is:
1. throw the fish away
2. tell staff I don't want it
3. eat the fish
4. contract with staff about food I like and what I don't like
5. call my therapist and talk about my feelings
I apologize about what I did and I won't try to hide fish"
